ʻĀkaka Falls State Park

Honomū, Hilo

A 442-Foot Waterfall on an Easy Paved Loop

8.2/ 10
Difficulty
Good to go

ʻĀkaka Falls State Park, in Honomū about 15 miles north of Hilo, is home to a 442-foot waterfall that plunges into a stream-eroded gorge. A paved loop of about 0.4 miles — with multiple steps, so it isn't wheelchair or stroller friendly — takes roughly 30–60 minutes and passes two waterfall viewpoints.

The park is listed open daily from 8:30 AM to 5 PM. Non-residents pay $5 per person (children 3 and under free) plus $10 per vehicle, by credit card only; DLNR encourages paying before you arrive because cell reception at the lot is limited. The small lot fills by mid-morning on weekends, so arrive before about 9 AM.

Current status (DLNR notice dated October 8, 2026): the park is open, but part of the trail is closed because of fallen trees, so don't assume you'll be able to see both waterfalls. The water and comfort station have reopened. Stay on the trail and follow posted controls.
