A Free Japanese-Style Garden on Hilo Bay, Linked to Coconut Island
Liliʻuokalani Gardens, on Banyan Drive on Hilo Bay, is a free Japanese-style garden named for Hawaiʻi's last reigning monarch, Queen Liliʻuokalani. It opened in 1917 as a tribute to the Japanese immigrants who worked Hawaiʻi's sugar plantations. A footbridge connects the gardens to Moku Ola (Coconut Island).
Admission is free. Sources disagree on hours — one says the gardens are open 24 hours, another says sunrise to sunset — so treat daylight as the safe assumption. It is a gentle, flat stroll.
