Waipiʻo Valley Lookout

Kukuihaele, Waimea Area

A Free Rim Lookout Over Waipiʻo — The Valley Road Itself Is Closed

9.2/ 10
Difficulty
Good to go

The Waipiʻo Valley Lookout is a free county park at the end of Highway 240 in Kukuihaele, about 9 miles past Honokaʻa town, with a paved viewing platform, a covered pavilion, restrooms, and a small parking lot. It looks into one of Hawaiʻi's most storied valleys.

The lot fills quickly — by mid-morning on weekends — and gate hours were not posted, so plan a daylight visit.

This is a lookout visit only. Waipiʻo Valley Road is closed to pedestrians, uncovered vehicles (including ATVs), and horseback access under a county emergency rule tied to a January 2, 2026 declaration, with exceptions for Hawaiʻi County residents, permitted licensed tour operators, and Native Hawaiians exercising traditional and customary rights. One guide says the rule was renewed September 1, 2026 through November 1, 2026 (unverified against an official county page). Hiking down is not allowed; the only visitor route to the valley floor is a permitted tour (one guide lists about $67 per adult, leaving on the hour, about 105 minutes — confirm). Call Hawaiʻi County Public Works at 808-961-8321 for road status.

Why Roamwise recommends this

A beautiful, easy viewpoint — treat it as a scenic stop, not a hike.

Best for: photography, a Hāmākua-coast scenic detour, travelers with limited mobility.

Insider tip: go early for parking, and book a permitted tour in advance if you want to see the valley floor.

Respect & culture: Waipiʻo is a culturally significant valley in Hawaiian history. Access to the valley floor is restricted to residents, permitted tours, and Native Hawaiians exercising traditional and customary rights — respect the closure.
