Maui's Classic Resort Beach — With a Real Current Risk at Black Rock
Kaanapali Beach is West Maui's best-known resort beach, a long stretch of sand fronting the Kaanapali resort corridor just north of Lahaina. The main beach is calm, sandy, and genuinely good for families and casual swimmers most of the year.
Its signature feature is Puʻu Kekaʻa ("Black Rock"), a lava outcrop at the north end of the beach that's one of Maui's most popular snorkel spots — turtles and reef fish are common right off the rock. It's also one of the more hazard-prone snorkel spots on the island: currents around the point can be strong and unpredictable even when the water looks calm, and the area has a documented history of drownings.
Kaanapali Beach and the surrounding resort corridor (Whalers Village and the beachwalk) are fully open and operating normally — this is separate from, and north of, Lahaina's historic town core, which is still rebuilding after the August 2023 wildfire.
Why Roamwise recommends this
A reliable, easy resort beach for most of the day, with a genuinely worthwhile but real-risk snorkel spot at one end.
Best for: a relaxed family beach day, an early-morning snorkel at Black Rock for confident swimmers, sunset viewing.
Insider tip: go to Black Rock early (7–9:30 AM) before the wind and crowds pick up, and don't swim past the outer point unless you're a strong, experienced ocean swimmer — the current there is the real hazard here, not the main beach.
- Hazards / conditions:
- Strong, sometimes dangerous currents around Black Rock (Puʻu Kekaʻa), especially on its north/outer side — the water can look calm from shore but the currents past the point are a documented drowning risk, with no warning signs posted there. The main stretch of Kaanapali Beach itself is calm and family-friendly, especially May–September.
- Safety notes:
- Snorkel Black Rock early (7–9:30 AM) for the calmest water and fewer crowds — winds typically pick up by 11 AM. Stay inside the outermost point of the rock; currents strengthen sharply just beyond it.
- Weather sensitivity:
- Winter months (Nov–Apr) bring more elevated surf and choppier water than summer.
- Best arrival time:
- 7:00–9:30 AM
