Kaunala Trail (Kaunala Loop)
North Shore Oahu
Kaunala Trail is located within the Pūpūkea Forest Reserve on Oʻahu's North Shore. Most
hikers complete it as the Kaunala Loop, a moderate forest adventure that combines shaded
singletrack with an old forest access road.
Rather than dramatic summit views, Kaunala is about immersion in nature. The trail passes
through eucalyptus forests, native vegetation, deep ravines, and rolling ridges, with occasional
openings revealing the North Shore coastline and Waiʻanae Mountains.
Because it lies within a public hunting area, hikers should be aware of hunting schedules and
wear bright-colored clothing.
