Lanikai Pillbox Trail (Kaʻiwa Ridge Trail)
Kailua / Waimanalo
Kaʻiwa Ridge Trail climbs a narrow ridgeline above the Lanikai neighborhood in Kailua to two
restored World War II observation stations (commonly called "pillboxes," though they were
actually military observation bunkers rather than defensive pillboxes). The trail has become one
of Oʻahu's most photographed hikes because of its incredible sunrise views over the Windward
Coast. Hawaii DLNR
Why Roamwise recommends this
Kaʻiwa Ridge Trail, better known as the Lanikai Pillbox Trail, delivers one of the highest
effort-to-reward ratios on Oʻahu. In under an hour, hikers reach two historic WWII
observation stations overlooking the turquoise waters of Kailua Bay, the Mokulua
Islands, and the dramatic Koʻolau Mountains. While the climb is steep and exposed, its
breathtaking sunrise views make it one of Hawaiʻi's most iconic hikes.
