Makapuʻu Point Lighthouse Trail

Kailua / Waimanalo

8.7/ 10
Difficulty
Good to go

The Makapuʻu Point Lighthouse Trail is located within Kaiwi State Scenic Shoreline on Oʻahu's

southeastern coast. The trail follows a former service road for approximately 1 mile (1.6 km)

each way, climbing gradually to two scenic overlooks above the historic lighthouse.

Although the trail gains only about 500 feet of elevation, the steady uphill grade and complete

lack of shade can make it feel more strenuous during the middle of the day. The panoramic

views are exceptional from beginning to end. Hawaii DLNR

Why Roamwise recommends this

The Makapuʻu Point Lighthouse Trail is one of Oʻahu's premier scenic walks, combining a

smooth paved path with dramatic sea cliffs, panoramic ocean views, and one of Hawaiʻi's

most photographed lighthouses. With excellent accessibility, outstanding whale

watching in winter, and a high reward for relatively little effort, it is an essential stop for

both first-time visitors and local residents exploring the island.
