Maunawili Trail (Koolaupoko Trail)
Kailua / Waimanalo
The Maunawili Trail is one of Oʻahu's classic backcountry hikes, traversing the lush windward
side of the Koʻolau Mountains between the Nuʻuanu Pali area and Waimānalo/Maunawili.
Rather than leading to a single viewpoint or waterfall, it is a long forest traverse through bamboo
groves, stream crossings, and tropical rainforest.
The trail is especially popular with experienced hikers, trail runners, and mountain bikers due to
its length and varied terrain. Historically, it has been about 10 miles one-way, making it one of
the island's premier point-to-point hikes. Hawaii DLNR
Why Roamwise recommends this
The Maunawili Trail is one of Oʻahu's premier rainforest traverses, offering a full-day
journey beneath the towering Koʻolau Mountains through bamboo forests, muddy stream
valleys, and lush tropical vegetation. Rather than focusing on a single viewpoint, the trail
rewards hikers with an immersive backcountry experience. Because trail conditions and
access can change, Roamwise should prominently display live status updates and
distinguish this trail from the separate Maunawili Falls route.

Local tips
- •This is a journey trail, not a destination hike—plan transportation if hiking the full
- •Expect mud even after several dry days.
- •Bring insect repellent, especially during humid weather.
- •Avoid the trail during heavy rain because stream crossings can become hazardous.
- •If you want to visit Maunawili Falls, use the designated falls access route—not this trail.
