Waʻahila Ridge Trail

Central Oahu / Honolulu Mauka

8.7/ 10
Difficulty
Good to go

Waʻahila Ridge Trail is one of Honolulu's premier ridge hikes, offering an outstanding

combination of panoramic city views, lush forest, and native birdlife—all within minutes of

Waikīkī and downtown. Beginning in Waʻahila Ridge State Recreation Area, the trail follows a

narrow ridgeline between Mānoa and Pālolo Valleys, gradually climbing through ironwood,

guava, and native forest before ending at the junction with Kolowalu Trail. The trail is

approximately 2.4 miles one-way with about 500 feet of elevation gain.

Unlike many Oʻahu ridge hikes that require steep climbs, Waʻahila Ridge gains elevation

gradually while providing continuous scenic overlooks. It is an excellent choice for hikers looking

for rewarding views without committing to a full-day summit adventure.

Roamwise Note: The official trail ends at the Kolowalu Trail junction. Do not

continue beyond this point toward the summit ridgeline, as that area enters a

Restricted Watershed Area and is closed to public access.

Why Roamwise recommends this

Waʻahila Ridge Trail is one of Honolulu's best half-day hikes, combining panoramic

skyline views, native forest, and excellent birdwatching with a moderate level of difficulty.

Its convenient trailhead, steady grades, and diverse scenery make it a standout option

for hikers seeking a classic Oʻahu ridge experience close to the city.
