Leonard's Bakery

Kapahulu, Honolulu

Hawaiʻi's Original Malasada Bakery, Open Daily Since 1953

8.8/ 10
Good to go

Leonard's Bakery, at 933 Kapahulu Avenue, says it began making malasadas in 1953 for the Portuguese Shrove Tuesday tradition and calls itself Hawaiʻi's original malasada bakery. It is open daily 5:30 AM to 7 PM. The menu page lists malasadas at $2.25 each and filled malasada puffs at $2.75 (custard, chocolate, haupia, macadamia nut and guava), with coatings of plain sugar, cinnamon sugar or li hing.

Phone orders at the Kapahulu store require a minimum of a dozen and an hour's notice; otherwise go straight to the counter. The menu lists coffee cake as temporarily unavailable, and the site lists extra Malasadamobile locations at several malls and a new airport location.

Why Roamwise recommends this

A classic Honolulu treat for a few dollars — the best cheap snack near Waikīkī.

Best for: a budget breakfast or afternoon snack, pairing with Kapiʻolani Park and the Honolulu Zoo, a taste of local Portuguese-Hawaiian tradition.

Insider tip: go early or mid-afternoon to avoid the longest lines, and eat the malasadas while they're hot.
